CLEARWATER — The proof sits in college football's most prestigious programs: Alabama. Ole Miss. Central Florida — all feature former Calvary Christian linemen who once dominated for the Warriors.

Now, a new group wants to eclipse them all.

"We want to be the best offensive line in school history," said senior Michael Ionata, whose older brother Joseph now is part of Alabama's front. "If we play to the best of our abilities, I think we can lead this team to a state title."

Bold words, but they carry weight when coming from a unit that averages 280 pounds per starter.

The Warriors have always produced elite linemen. The 2021 squad might have been their finest — a group featuring Joseph Ionata and Preston Cushman, who played at Ole Miss before transferring to Central Florida. That unit set the standard.

This year's front five believes it can raise the bar.

Four returning seniors form the core: Jaxon Corey (committed to Furman), Michael Ionata (Florida State), Jack Mosher and Isaac Toth. Both Mosher and Toth hold offers from Webber University. Transfer Emerson Straszewski from East Lake rounds out the starting five, while his brother Max provides versatility on both sides of the line.

"That '21 group was probably the best we had," Calvary Christian coach Wes Safford said. "But this group could be right up there."

The combination of talent, size and depth gives the Warriors championship aspirations. More importantly, it continues a pipeline that has become the program's calling card.

College recruiters know what they're getting from Calvary Christian linemen. These aren't just big bodies — they're technically sound players who understand leverage, footwork and the mental aspects of trench warfare.

The current group learned from watching Joseph Ionata and Cushman become stars. Now they want to create their own legacy while setting an example for the next wave.

That standard has produced consistent results. While skill position players grab headlines, Calvary Christian has built its reputation on controlling the line of scrimmage. The Warriors understand that championships are won in the trenches, not in highlight reels.

This senior-heavy group has one season to cement its place in program lore. With college commitments secured and expectations sky-high, the pressure is on.

The 2021 unit set the benchmark. Now it's time to see if this group can surpass it — and perhaps deliver that elusive state title in the process.

The foundation is set. The talent is undeniable. All that remains is putting it together on Friday nights.
