Opening: new movie releases

A number of new movies and limited television series will debut this week, including the following titles opening in theaters or premiering via video on demand on various streaming platforms:

‘Psycho Killer’

Genre: Horror thriller

Cast: Georgina Campbell, James Preston Rogers, Logan Miller, Grace Dove, and Malcolm McDowell

Director: Gavin Polone

Rated: R

Following the brutal murder of her husband, a Kansas highway patrol officer (Georgina Campbell) sets out on a journey to track down the perpetrator. As the hunt progresses, she comes to realize the man responsible (James Preston Rogers) is a sadistic serial killer, and the depth of his mental depravity and his sinister agenda is more twisted than anyone could have imagined.

The film will be released theatrically by 20th Century Studios on Feb. 20.

‘This Is Not a Test’

Genre: Apocalyptic horror

Cast: Oliva Holt, Froy Gutierrez, Carson MacCormac, Corteon Moore, Chloe Avakian, Joelle Farrow, and Luke MacFarlane

Director: Adam MacDonald

Rated: R

Sloane (Oliva Holt) and a small group of her classmates take cover in their high school to escape their suddenly apocalyptic hometown. As danger relentlessly pounds on the doors, Sloane begins to see the world through the eyes of people who actually want to live and takes matters into her own hands.

The film is set to be released on Feb. 20 by Independent Film Company and Shudder.

‘The Dreadful’

Genre: Gothic horror

Cast: Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurence O'Fuarain and Jonathan Howard

Director: Natasha Kermani

Rated: R

Experience an unnerving Gothic tale of horror set in medieval England. Anne (Sophie Turner) and her domineering mother-in-law Morwen (Marcia Gay Harden) struggle to survive on the outskirts of society. But when a man from Anne’s past returns from war, a curse begins to take shape through a mysterious knight and threatens to destroy them all.

Lionsgate is set to release the film in select theaters and digital on Feb. 20.

‘Hellfire’

Genre: Action thriller

Cast: Stephen Lang, Dolph Lundgren, Harvey Keitel, Scottie Thompson, Johnny Yong Bosch, Michael Sirow, Chris Mullinax, Maurice Compte, Levon Panek, Jason Scott Morgan, Carl Bailey, and Natalie Canerday

Director: Isaac Florentine

Rated: R

A haunted ex-Green Beret drifter (Stephen Lang) wanders into a Southern town ruled by a ruthless crime boss (Harvey Keitel) and a corrupt sheriff (Dolph Lundgren). When violence erupts, the Man wages a one-man war for justice, redemption, and the soul of a broken town.

The film is scheduled to be released on Feb. 17 by Saban.

‘I Can Only Imagine 2’

Genre: Christian biographical drama

Cast: John Michael Finley, Milo Ventimiglia, Sophie Skelton, Arielle Kebbel, Sammy Dell, Trace Adkins, and Dennis Quaid

Directors: Andrew Erwin and Brent McCorkle

Rated: PG

After the breakout success of the song “I Can Only Imagine,” MercyMe’s Bart Millard (John Michael Finley) is living the dream — sold-out arenas, a devoted fan base, and a thriving career. But behind the spotlight, Bart’s past threatens the family he’s built, especially the fragile bond with his son, Sam (Sammy Dell).

When hopeful newcomer Tim Timmons (Milo Ventimiglia) joins the band for their biggest tour yet, he unknowingly brings a renewed gratitude to Bart’s life through their unlikely friendship. Bart soon discovers that Tim carries hardships — and secrets — of his own, forcing him to face his past and repair his relationships with Sam and his wife, Shannon (Sophie Skelton), before fame costs him what matters most. The film is scheduled to be released by Lionsgate on Feb. 20.

‘Redux Redux’

Genre: Science fiction thriller

Cast: Michaela McManus, Stella Marcus, Jeremy Holm, Jim Cummings, Grace Van Dien, Taylor Misiak, and Dendrie Taylor

Director: Kevin McManus and Matthew McManus

Rated: R

In an attempt to avenge her daughter’s death, Irene Kelly (Michaela McManus) travels through parallel universes, killing her daughter’s murderer over and over again. With each kill, she grows addicted to the revenge streak, putting her own humanity in jeopardy.

Saban Films will release “Redux Redux” on Feb. 20.

‘One Mile’

Genre: Action thriller

Cast: Ryan Phillippe, Amélie Hoeferle, and C. Thomas Howell

Director: Adam Davidson

Rated: R

Ryan Phillippe stars as a special forces operative who uses his training to track his daughter after she’s kidnapped by a violent, off-the-grid community in the wilderness. Across two gripping chapters, this is a high-stakes survival thriller about a father who will stop at nothing to protect his family.

The film will be released by Republic Pictures and will be available to rent or own on digital platforms on Feb. 20.

‘Lazarus: The Awakening’

Genre: Science fiction and action

Cast: Sean Riggs, R. Marcus Taylor, Courtney Grace, Britton Webb, and Kiki Haynes

Director: Art Camacho

Not rated

A vigilante resurrected from death hunts a drug empire in Jackson, clashing with a kingpin, a reporter, and a city consumed by fentanyl. Justice becomes war.

The film is set to be released by Samuel Goldwyn Films on Feb. 20.

‘Midwinter Break’

Genre: Drama

Cast: Lesley Manville and Ciarán Hinds

Director: Polly Findlay

Rated: PG-13

“Midwinter Break” is a stirring meditation on faith, commitment, and the enduring power of love, as a longtime couple takes a life-changing trip to Amsterdam.

The film is scheduled to be released on Feb. 20 by Focus Features.
