Off-Central Players to stage ‘Ripcord’

ST. PETERSBURG — The Off-Central Players will present “Ripcord,” the razor-sharp comedy by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, running April 9-19, at 2260 First Ave. N., St. Petersburg.

Performances are Thursday and Friday, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 3 p.m. There also will be a pay-what-you-can performance on Wednesday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $15 to $36. For tickets, visit www.theoffcentral.com.

Starring two of the Tampa Bay area’s most well-known and beloved stage performers, “Ripcord” centers on Abby (Roxanne Fay), a sharp-tongued resident of a senior living facility who prefers solitude and silence. Her carefully controlled world is turned upside down when Marilyn (Bonnie Agan), an irrepressibly cheerful new roommate, moves in. What begins as a harmless bet quickly spirals into a wildly inventive series of pranks, schemes, and psychological warfare that stretches far beyond the walls of their shared room. As the rivalry escalates — with elaborate tricks involving family members, haunted houses, and even skydiving, the women’s fierce competition begins to reveal surprising truths about grief, loneliness, and the possibility of connection.

“It is incredible way to close our season with a show starring these two powerhouses,” said Alan Mohney Jr., Off-Central Players managing director. “Bonnie and Roxanne are perfectly paired in this witty, sparring match. Everyone will love this production.”

The production is staged in the immersive 43-seat black box theatre the Off-Central Players call home by director Jack Holloway. Agan and Fay are joined on stage by Johnny Garde as Scotty, Katherine Yacko as Colleen, Dylan Barlowe as Benjamin, and Rey Garcia as Derek and others.

The Off-Central Players is a 501c3 not-for-profit professional theater company. Visit www.theoffcentral.com.

LAB Theater Project to present Steven Patrick world premiere

TAMPA — The world premiere of “X≠X” by playwright Steven Patrick will open on Thursday, April 16, at LAB Theater Project, 812 E Henderson Ave., Tampa.

Performances are Thursday through Saturday, 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 3 p.m. Tickets are $31. Visit www.labtheaterproject.org.

LAB Theater Project continues its tradition of producing bold new work with “X≠X.” Directed by Anne Griswold, “X≠X” explores the delicate intersections of memory, identity, and the choices that shape our lives. Set within the world of Revson College — whose motto proclaims “A World of Possibilities” — the play invites audiences to consider the quiet but profound question: “what if…?”

What if the past isn’t finished with us?

What if love doesn’t end when we think it does?

What if a single moment could change everything?

Through a deeply human story of loss, connection, and the paths we choose, “X≠X” explores how grief, hope, and possibility can coexist in ways we never expect.

The production marks another in the canon of world premieres for LAB Theater Project, a company dedicated to developing and presenting new theatrical works. LAB has earned national recognition for its commitment to playwright-driven storytelling.

MFA St. Pete welcomes ‘Magic Grasshopper’

ST. PETERSBURG — The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, will debut a new outdoor public art initiative this spring with the presentation of “Magic Grasshopper,” a monumental sculpture by Chicago-based artist Yvette Mayorga.

The installation opened on March 26 and is found directly in front of the museum’s main entrance, marking the first project in a new public art series designed to extend the museum’s programming beyond its galleries and into its surrounding landscape.

Originally commissioned by Times Square Arts and presented in New York in 2025, “Magic Grasshopper” is a 30-foot-long kinetic sculpture that resembles a surreal carriage pulled by carousel-style horses. Rendered in Mayorga’s signature candy-pink palette and embellished with her distinctive “faux-frosting” piping technique, the sculpture combines elements of childhood nostalgia with layered narratives of migration, labor, and colonial history.

A first-generation Mexican-American Latinx artist whose family emigrated from Mexico, Mayorga frequently draws on personal and cultural histories in her work. Her recurring technique — piping acrylic paint through pastry bags to create ornate, frosting-like surfaces — was inspired by her mother’s work as a baker after immigrating to the United States. Through this style that the artist calls “Latinxoco,” Mayorga brings together Latinx and Rococo aesthetics as a vehicle for addressing the often-invisible labor of immigrant and working-class communities, embedding stories of migration, feminized labor, and belonging.

"Seeing my ‘Magic Grasshopper’ find a new home in front of the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, feels like a wonderful continuation of its ongoing journey,” said Mayorga. “The work is rooted in community, pride, and the transformation of the familiar into something extraordinary — and I can't think of a better setting for that conversation than a museum space open to the community where it can be experienced by so many. I am truly thrilled for the St. Pete community to engage with this piece and everything it represents."

Positioned in the plaza leading to the museum’s original 1965 entrance, the installation will create a dramatic juxtaposition of architectural styles, while also extending the museum outward and inviting the public to encounter contemporary art before entering the building.

To accompany the public installation, the museum will present a focused exhibition later this summer of Mayorga’s works in dialogue with historical paintings from its permanent collection. Several of these new works draw inspiration from the portraits and painterly traditions of Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, placing Mayorga’s visual language in conversation with European art history.

The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, is at 255 Beach Drive NE. For information, visit mfastpete.org.

‘RATical 3’ set B. Stark Art Studio

ST. PETERSBURG — “RATical 3: Come See Me” is slated for April at B. Stark Art Studio, No. 208 in ArtLofts, 10 Fifth St. N., St. Petersburg.

The show is a celebration of all things rat as depicted in art. This is the third annual fundraiser for Florida Rat Rescuers Network. It is free to enter and sales are direct to artists. The only request is that artist donate a minimum of 20% of their art sale to FRRN, a 501c3 organization that works to educate on pet rat ownership, help with emergency cases, and rehome domestic pet rats.

The point of the show is to express creativity and give this misunderstood pet a little bit of love. It is also to educate people that pet rats do not deserve the stigma that they often have. They are sweet, intelligent, and loving creatures who bond with their owners and with each other.

For more information, email brandybstark13@gmail.com.

If the show is out of reach, a live online presentation will happen via the RATical Facebook page on April 4 at 4 p.m. Attendees can watch the livestream for free and bid on art. The art show will debut to the public at Second Saturday Artwalk on April 11, from 5 to 9 p.m.
