SAN ANTONIO — The Florida Department of Transportation has begun work to improve the interchange at Interstate 75 and State Road 52, aiming to ease traffic as the area continues to see heavy development of homes, retail space and new businesses.

The $2.1 million project, which began April 26 and is tentatively scheduled to finish in late summer or early fall, will, according to the FDOT website:

• Restripe existing pavement to provide a two-lane northbound I-75 exit ramp to SR 52.

• Add a two-lane ramp from westbound SR 52 to the southbound I-75 entrance ramp.

• Add dual left-turn lanes from eastbound SR 52 to the northbound I-75 entrance ramp.

• Provide two receiving lanes on the northbound I-75 entrance ramp.

• Reconfigure existing lanes on westbound SR 52 from Pasco Road to I-75.

State Road 52 has undergone major expansions in recent years. In 2023, a new section opened as a divided four-lane highway running from I-75 east to U.S. 301.

In 2024, FDOT finished widening State Road 52 to six lanes from U.S. 41 to the Suncoast Parkway and redesigned the intersection of SR 52 and U.S. 41.

FDOT is also in the design phase of a project to widen about seven miles of State Road 52 to a divided four-lane highway from U.S. 41 to Bellamy Brothers Boulevard, near the recently opened Amazon distribution center. Construction is tentatively set to begin in fall 2027.

Construction is already underway on a pedestrian overpass on the Suncoast Trail west of the Suncoast Parkway. The $9.9 million project is slated for completion in early 2027 and is expected to bring periodic lane closures.
