Opening: new movie releases

A number of new movies and limited television series will debut this week, including the following titles opening in theaters or premiering via video on demand on various streaming platforms:

‘Obsession’

Genre: Supernatural horror

Cast: Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter

Director: Curry Barker

Rated: R

After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 15 by Focus Features.

‘In the Grey’

“In The Grey” follows a covert team of elite operatives who live in the global shadows, as comfortable wielding power and influence as they are automatic weapons and high explosives.

When a ruthless despot steals a billion-dollar fortune, the team is sent to steal it back on what would be for anyone else a suicide mission. What begins as an impossible heist gets much worse, spiraling into an all-out war of strategy, deception and survival.

The film is scheduled to be released by Black Bear Pictures on May 15.

‘Is God Is’

Cast: Kara Young, Mallori Johnson, Janelle Monáe, Vivica A. Fox, and Sterling K. Brown

Director: Aleshea Harris

In “Is God Is,” two sisters embark on an epic quest for revenge, confronting a charged family history that will push them to extraordinary lengths. The film is Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut and is based on Harris’ adaptation of her award-winning play of the same name.

The film will be theatrically released on May 15 by Orion Pictures for Amazon MGM Studios.

‘Magic Hour’

Genre: Drama

Cast: Katie Aselton, Daveed Diggs, Brad Garrett, and Susan Sullivan

Director: Katie Aselton

Charlie (Daveed Diggs) and Erin (Katie Aselton) escape to the desert to navigate an unexpected and challenging new phase of their relationship.

The film is scheduled to be released on May 15 by Greenwich Entertainment.

‘Forge’

Genre: Comedy and drama

The film is scheduled to be released by Utopia on May 15.

‘Driver’s Ed’

A group of teens hit the road in a stolen driver’s ed car, racing against time to help a lovesick high school senior (Sam Nivola) track down his college-freshman girlfriend and win her back.

The film is scheduled to be released in select theaters and on digital formats on May 15 by Vertical.

‘An Enemy Within’

Genre: Thriller

Cast: William Moseley, Patrick Baladi, Tristan Gemmill, Kim Spearman, and Alexander Lincoln

The film is scheduled for digital and on-demand release on May 15 by Saban Films.
