PALMETTO — Graves at the Old Memphis Cemetery were smashed and some spray painted in red with “Trump” and “DeSantis,” but they will be rebuilt thanks to the generosity of a local businessman.

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies recently identified 17 damaged gravesites at the cemetery, 202 25th St. W., including headstones that were knocked down. During their investigation, detectives found no indication that any remains were removed from the gravesites. Some of the gravesites are believed to have been damaged as long ago as March.

No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.

Manatee County Commissioner Amanda Ballard said she planned to request county funds to repair the graves at the commission meeting on Tuesday, May 19.

But Chris Mullinex, of Palmetto-based Gilliam Construction, who has experience building cemetery vaults, has offered to rebuild the damaged graves at no cost to the county.

“Whoever did this meant for it to be negative and divide the community, but it will instead turn out to bring the community together,” Ballard said, adding that she will request the funds for added security measures including fencing and cameras.
