County to use animal shelter for pelican rehab

By Tampa Bay Beacons

Manatee County commissioners have approved a lease agreement with Friends of the Pelicans Inc. to use the former Palmetto Animal Shelter, 305 25th St. W., as a seabird rehabilitation facility. The partnership will expand the county’s capacity to rescue and rehabilitate injured pelicans and other coastal wildlife.

“Its close proximity to the Skyway Fishing Pier, one of the region’s leading sources of seabird injuries, makes transforming this former county animal shelter into a dedicated rehabilitation facility a true win-win for taxpayers and anyone who cares about protecting our coastal wildlife,” Natural Resources Director Charlie Hunsicker said.

Animal shelter operations have relocated to the Bishop Animal Shelter, 5718 21st Ave. W., Bradenton.
