Opening: new movie releases

A number of new movies and limited television series will debut this week, including the following titles opening in theaters or premiering via video on demand on various streaming platforms:

‘Disclosure Day’

Genre: Science fiction

Cast: Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo

Director: Steven Spielberg

Rated: PG-13

The film is scheduled to be released by Universal Pictures on June 12.

‘In the Hand of Dante’

Genre: Drama

Cast: Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, Louis Cancelmi, Sabrina Impacciatore, Benjamin Clementine, Martin Scorsese, Al Pacino, and Jason Momoa

Director: Julian Schnabel

“In the Hand of Dante” follows the parallel lives of a New York author (Nick Tosches) in the 21st century who embarks on a violent journey after he is recruited by a mafia don to steal Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s “The Divine Comedy” written in the poet’s own hand, and Dante in the 14th century seeking inspiration to write his most important work — each man unknowingly connected through time and their obsessive quest for love, beauty, and the divine.

The film is scheduled to be theatrically released on June 12, followed by a streaming release on Netflix on June 24.

‘Find Your Friends’

Genre: Thriller

Cast: Helena Howard, Bella Thorne, Zión Moreno, Chloe Cherry and Sophia Ali

Director: Izabel Pakzad

Amber (Helena Howard) and her four best friends flee Los Angeles for a girls’ trip in Joshua Tree, only to find themselves unwelcome in a desert town simmering with quiet hostility.

As isolation sets in and encounters with aggressive locals grow more threatening, festering resentments within the group begin to surface. What begins as fun and reckless escape spirals into a violent struggle for control and survival, as past wounds and present dangers collide in a night that turns their trip into a revenge-fueled nightmare.

The film is scheduled to be released by Shudder on June 12.

‘Stop! That! Train!’

Genre: Action comedy

Cast: RuPaul Charles, Ginger Minj, and Jujubee

Director: Adam Shankman

The film follows best friends Tess (Ginger Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee), train stewardesses who trade their dreary shifts on the Stank Rail for the glitzy Glamazonian Express. When a catastrophic “Stormaganza” threatens to derail the high-speed train and crash it into Celebration, Florida, the duo in coach must join forces with the snobby first-class attendants (Symone, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Marcia Marcia Marcia) and President Gagwell (RuPaul) to save the day in this wild ride of camp and comedy.

The film will be theatrically released on June 12 by Bleecker Street.

‘Honeyjoon’

Genre: Comedy and drama

Cast: Ayden Mayeri, Amira Casar and José Condessa

Director: Lilian T. Mehrel

In this light-and-dark comedy, June (Ayden Mayeri) and her Persian-British mom Lela (Amira Casar) travel to the romantic Azores islands for a grief anniversary, with contrasting ways of coping. A hot philosophical surfer takes them on a tour as they surf the waves of life, loss, flirting … an unforgettable ride.

The film is scheduled to be released by Utopia on June 10.

‘O Horizon’

Genre: Science fiction, comedy and drama

Cast: Maria Bakalova, David Strathairn, and Adam Pally

Director: Madeleine Sackler

“O Horizon” stars Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova as a young neuroscientist navigating an exhilarating new romance and a groundbreaking career discovery amidst the recent loss of her father (David Strathairn).

When an emerging technology suddenly allows her to speak with him again, it turns her life upside down. Emmy Award-winning director Madeleine Rotzler crafts a magical realist fable for our modern era that considers our relationships amid rapidly evolving technologies with warmth and humor.

The film is scheduled to be released by Variance Films on June 12.

‘This Tempting Madness’

Genre: Psychological thriller

Cast: Simone Ashley, Mojean Aria, Austin Stowell, Suraj Sharma, and Zenobia Shroff

Director: Jennifer E. Montgomery

A woman (Simone Ashley) awakens from a coma severely battered, her memory a blur and her husband (Austin Stowell) missing. As fragments of her past resurface, love, guilt, and fear collide until she can no longer distinguish reality from fantasy.

The film is scheduled to be released in select theaters and on video on demand by Vertical on June 12.

‘Broken Land’

Genre: Drama

Cast: David Morse, Jaklyn Bejarano, and Bill Heck

Director: J.T. Walker

Rated: PG-13

Carson Tidwell (David Morse) wants nothing more than to be left alone on his rural Texas ranch. When he accidentally shoots a pregnant migrant worker crossing his land, he feels compelled to protect her from his estranged Border Patrol agent son. As she recovers, a bond forms that ultimately heals them both.

The film is scheduled to be released by Well Go USA on June 12.
