ST. PETERSBURG — It may seem premature to talk about the upcoming season at American Stage when “The Hot Wing King,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by acclaimed playwright Katori Hall, just opened at the beginning of the month. The show — which closes out American Stage’s 2025-2026 season — will run through June 28 in the Raymond James Theatre, 163 Third St. N., St. Petersburg.

As one season ends, preparations are already underway for the next one. American Stage has crafted a new season that will celebrate reimagined classics, family-friendly fun, rock and roll, and the joy of gathering together for something that can only be experienced live.
Earlier this year, Helen R. Murray shared the promise of American Stage’s 2026-2027 season.
“There’s something pretty amazing that happens when people experience a story together,” said Murray. “Studies even show that during intense moments, audience members’ heart rates can actually sync up. That’s exactly the kind of connection we create.”
Last month, Murray — who served as the theater’s producing artistic director, stepped down. To support the transition, American Stage has engaged nationally respected theatre leader Stephanie Gularte, a former CEO/producing artistic director of American Stage, as a strategic consultant. She will offer strategic counsel to staff, including interim artistic director Anthony Gervais, and board leadership to guide the organization through this next chapter.
So far, there is no indication that Murray’s departure will cause any changes to American Stage’s lineup of mainstage productions.
With digital fatigue and social isolation increasingly cited by younger generations, in‑person gatherings are the most vital way for people to build genuine social bonds and shared experiences. American Stage has always been here for this very purpose, and is again answering the call. The theater’s 49th season emphasizes personal connection and shared human experience in an increasingly virtual world, with plays ranging from gender-bent classics and world premieres, to beloved musicals and immersive outdoor experiences.
Following is a look at the 2026-2027 lineup of mainstage productions:
“A Night With Janis Joplin”
Sept. 16 – Oct. 11, 2026
A high-energy musical tribute that traces Janis Joplin’s meteoric rise and the iconic female artists who shaped her legendary sound.
“Unhinged”
Nov. 4 – 22, 2026
Written by Steven J. Burge, this 75-minute confessional blends storytelling, outrageous humor, and poignant reflections on mental health, addiction, and modern life. This production will serve as the world premiere of this play.
“Macbeth, Macbeth, Macbeth”
Jan. 27 – Feb. 21, 2027
Helen R. Murray’s inventive adaptation reimagines Shakespeare’s tragedy with role-swapping performers in a sharp, high-energy exploration of ambition, morality, and power. This production will serve as the world premiere of this play.
Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B
June 2 – 20, 2027
Written by Kate Hamill, this fast-paced, feminist reinvention of the classic detective story features quirky female roommates taking on crime, chaos, and codependency.
Next season’s American Stage in the Park production will be “Shrek: The Musical,” running March 31 through May 2, 2027. With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, this family-friendly adaptation brings everyone’s favorite ogre to life in a hilarious, heartwarming tale about acceptance, family, and heroism.
In addition to these shows, American Stage also will host the following special events:
• Broadway by Candlelight: What I Did For Love will take place on Thursday, Oct. 1. American Stage’s annual gala, an evening celebrating Broadway’s greatest love songs.
• “Something Wicked” will be presented Oct. 29-30. This Halloween variety show will feature Shakespeare’s most famous witches, ghosts, and mischievous characters.
• “Holiday Cabaret” is set for Dec. 5, 12, and 19. A festive sing-along featuring cozy classics and cheeky seasonal fun.
• “Tales by Twilight” will run Feb. 11-28. This will be a magical, family-friendly immersive theatre experience along the nature trail at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve.
American Stage also plans to revive its Summer Cabaret Series in July 2027, offering relaxed performances featuring beloved Broadway songs in a cabaret setting.
American Stage offers a variety of flexible ways to experience the 2026-2027 season. In addition to single-ticket purchases, audiences can choose from mainstage or full season subscriptions, flex passes and opening night packages, a musical lovers package, or new monthly memberships.
