TAMPA — Alonso ran through the field unbeaten to win the Fellowship of Christian Athletes 7-on-7 tournament, going 8-0 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ AdventHealth training facility.
The Ravens opened with pool-play wins over East Lake, Sumner and Fivay. They beat Hudson, Fivay and Plant in the playoff rounds, then knocked off Zephyrhills in the semifinals and topped East Lake again in the championship.
“It’s definitely a great feeling getting the boys out and building chemistry and learning how to compete together,” Alonso coach Hayden Cantrell said. “Confidence wise, we know fall football is much different than 7on7 and there’s a lot more work needed to be done to reach our goals.”
Quarterback Michael Pyne ran the offense. He passed for more than 1,700 yards last season with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions for a team that finished 6-4.
The Class of 2028 prospect holds more than a dozen Division I offers, among them Virginia Tech, Ole Miss, Wisconsin, Maryland and Memphis. He is the son of Jim Pyne, a Virginia Tech All-American who started at left guard for the Buccaneers from 1995 to 1997 and later played for Detroit, Cleveland and Philadelphia.
Receivers Amare Daniels and Alex Drake Jr. gave Pyne targets all day, with Drake also working in the secondary. Safety Jackson Langston stood out on defense.
