The Florida Department of Health in Hernando County is urging residents who have a disability or special need to register for the state’s special needs shelter program before hurricane season peaks in late summer.
Eligible conditions include a medical issue that requires assistance but not hospitalization. Residents can sign up with the Florida Special Needs Shelter Registry at specialneeds.hernandocounty.us. The most dangerous stretch of the season typically runs from mid-August through mid-October.
Registration does not guarantee a spot. After an application is submitted, officials will review it to determine whether the person qualifies and whether the shelter can meet their needs.
Signing up also lets emergency management officials share information and reach residents quickly during a storm. When shelters open, the county’s special needs shelter will be at Challenger K-8, 13400 Elgin Blvd. in Spring Hill, unless officials announce another location.
Eligible residents should pack a kit that includes:
• A list of medications and dosages.
• A 30-day supply of medications.
• Vital medical equipment for those who depend on electricity or oxygen.
• Backup power sources for essential equipment.
• Any special dietary items or food.
• Personal information, including a photo ID, insurance card, list of emergency contacts and primary care provider’s contact information.
After registering, residents will receive details from the county’s emergency management agency about evacuation and sheltering options.
