Solid waste, recycling convenience center fees change June 1

BROOKSVILLE — New fees at Hernando County’s East and West Hernando convenience centers take effect June 1, following approval by the County Commission on Dec. 16 of last year.

The centers are open only to property owners and residents who pay the annual solid waste disposal assessment through their property taxes. Users must transport waste themselves and show proof of ownership or residency at a qualifying property. Commercial waste is not accepted.

Fees

• $5 for up to five bags of household trash, with a maximum of 60 gallons per bag.

• $15 per visit for loads of more than five bags and for bulk loads.

• $15 per visit for yard waste, including branches less than 8 inches in diameter and 10 inches in length.

Recycling and residential household hazardous waste will continue to be accepted at no charge but must be clearly identifiable. Materials should be brought in original containers, open bins or clear bags for inspection. Plastic bags must be disposed of separately.

The Northwest Solid Waste Facility, the county’s main landfill, will no longer offer a free 2,000-pound allowance. All waste taken there will be charged by weight.

Usage guidelines

• Loads over 100 cubic feet and all commercial waste must go to the main landfill.

• Residents are limited to one trip per day, regardless of how many properties they own.

• Trailer use is capped at five visits per calendar year. Trailers must be less than 5 feet wide and 10 feet long.

• Loads are restricted to 2 feet high, except for furniture such as couches, cabinets and tables.

• Dump trucks, moving vans and other oversized vehicles are prohibited.

• Staff does not help unload, so residents must bring help.

• Small loads of loose debris equivalent to four recycling bins must be containerized or bundled. Larger loose loads and items over 10 cubic feet must be taken to the main landfill.

Accepted materials

The convenience centers accept household trash, indoor furniture, electronics, clothing, bedding and limited yard waste, including grass clippings, leaves and small branches.

Recycling — paper, cardboard, aluminum and steel cans, and rigid plastic containers — is accepted at no charge at all locations. Recyclables must be clean and free of trash, food waste and plastic bags.

Small quantities of residential household hazardous waste, including latex paint, used oil, fluorescent lamps, and lead-acid and rechargeable batteries, are also accepted. Commercial hazardous waste is prohibited.

Syringes, lancets and unwanted non-narcotic medications may be dropped off in approved sharps containers or heavy plastic containers, such as empty laundry detergent jugs.

Not accepted

The centers do not take construction or land-clearing debris, tires, automotive parts, chemicals, liquid waste, biomedical waste, radioactive materials or other hazardous materials. Those items must go to the main landfill or another approved disposal site.

Hours at both convenience centers and the main landfill will not change.
