Opening: new movie releases

A number of new movies and limited television series will debut this week, including the following titles opening in theaters or premiering via video on demand on various streaming platforms:

‘Moana’

Genre: Live-action musical adventure

Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Rena Owen, John Tui, Frankie Adams, Jemaine Clement, and Catherine Laga’aia

Director: Thomas Kail

Rated: PG

In “Moana,” Disney’s live-action reimagining of the beloved Oscar-nominated animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) answers the ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.

The film is scheduled to be released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on July 10.

‘Evil Dead Burn’

Genre: Supernatural horror

“Evil Dead Burn” unleashes the franchise’s most savage and terrifying ride to date, blazing onto big screens with an all-new chapter of carnage and demonic mayhem.

After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites — turning the gathering into a family reunion from hell — she comes to discover that the vows she took in life live on … even in death.

The film is scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures on July 10.

‘Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass’

In the charming town of Willowbrook, Kansas, hairdresser Gail Daughtry (Zoey Deutch) is engaged to her devoted high school sweetheart, Tom (Michael Cassidy). Her life takes a turn when a trip to a book signing leads to Tom meeting — and sleeping — with his “celebrity pass.”

Reeling from the betrayal, Gail impulsively joins her friend Otto (Miles Gutierrez-Riley) on a trip to Los Angeles, where a psychic convinces Gail that the only way to save her marriage is to “even the scales” with her own celebrity pass: Jon Hamm. Thus begins an epic journey through Tinseltown as Gail and Otto join forces with a talent agency assistant, a paparazzo, and actor John Slattery, all in the search for Hamm. Along the way, they collide with celebrities and are hunted by a group of Italian assassins as they get ever closer to finding the elusive star.

The film is scheduled to be theatrically released on July 10 by Sony Pictures Classics.

‘Night Nurse’

‘Barrio Triste’

In an impoverished neighborhood of 1980s Medellín, a group of disaffected teens steals a TV reporter’s camera to document their lives.

Piercing the derelict landscape’s oppressive atmosphere with disarming reflections on dreams and death, their understanding of reality and hope begins to erode as reports of mysterious lights falling from the sky coincide with temporal and spatial distortions.

The film is scheduled to be released by Film Movement on July 10.

‘The Isolate Thief’

Genre: Western drama

Cast: Mackenzie Foy, Odeya Rush, Jack Kesy, Ty Simpkins, Martin Sensmeier with Joe Pantoliano and Sean Bean

One bitter-cold winter during the Civil War, a young woman becomes the lone caretaker of a remote Union Army outpost. When a stash of stolen gold falls into her lap, a gang of vicious outlaws comes looking for it. As they turn her home into a battleground, she must stay one step ahead of them in order to survive.

The film is scheduled to be released in select theaters on July 10.
