By Tampa Bay Beacons

The pilot of a small plane made an emergency landing in the water off Honeymoon Island on Sunday, July 12, authorities said.

The incident happened about 12:30 p.m. when the pilot had engine problems, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and the Dunedin Fire Department. The pilot made an “emergency controlled landing” about 25 yards just offshore, officials said.

The pilot and a passenger were able to get out of the plane and walk to shore. Neither were injured. The sheriff’s office has not released their names.

A small amount of fuel leaked into the water before the plane was pulled to shore Sunday evening.
