TAMPA — “Through Their Lens: A Journey of Self-Exploration,” the third annual student photography exhibition held in memory of Jacob Ari Kamis, will be on view from Aug. 4 through Sept. 20, at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, 1630 E. Seventh Ave., Tampa.
This exhibition features the work of emerging student photographers from across the Tampa Bay area. The showcase highlights the creativity, perspective, and personal storytelling of young artists exploring identity, environment, and self-expression through photography.
Drawn from a highly competitive pool of 221 submissions representing 27 schools across Hillsborough, Manatee, and Pinellas counties, the exhibition showcases 25 selected photographs alongside a selection of work by Jacob Ari Kamis. Together, these images form a powerful dialogue between past and present — honoring Jacob’s artistic legacy while amplifying the voices of a new generation.
“Through Their Lens” invites viewers to consider how photography can serve as a tool for reflection and discovery. Each image offers a unique perspective shaped by the lived experiences of its maker, demonstrating the ability of young artists to engage deeply with the world around them and translate those observations into meaningful visual narratives.

Jacob Ari Kamis, in whose memory the exhibition was created, discovered his passion for photography at a young age and quickly developed a distinctive eye. His work — ranging from dynamic automotive imagery to travel photography — reflected both technical skill and genuine curiosity. His legacy continues through this exhibition, which fosters artistic growth and community connection through the lens of photography.
The exhibition is part of an ongoing initiative to support youth engagement in the arts and provide opportunities for students to exhibit their work in a professional museum setting. Cash prizes will be awarded to selected artists, recognizing excellence across multiple categories.
The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is dedicated to exhibiting important photographic art as central to contemporary life and culture. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free for children and members. General admission is $12.
