Woman’s Club awards $20,500 to local nonprofits
CLEARWATER — The North Pinellas Woman’s Club has awarded $20,500 in grants to 21 local nonprofits, money raised through its annual Christmas Under the Oaks arts and crafts festival.
The festival, in its 49th year, will be held Nov. 8 at St. Petersburg College’s Clearwater campus.
Seven organizations received $2,000 community grants:
• Angels Against Abuse — items for children removed from abusive homes
• Community Dental Clinic — supplies for low-income, uninsured patients
• End 68 Hours of Hunger — weekend food for Pinellas County school pantries
• Homeless Emergency Project — prescription eyeglasses
• Hope Villages of America — bedding for a domestic violence emergency shelter
• Literacy Council of Upper Pinellas — citizenship classes in north Pinellas County
• Sounding Joy — hearing aids for children of low-income, uninsured families
Fourteen organizations received $500 member grants:
• A Mother’s Arms — a class on preventing child abuse, neglect and fatalities
• Clearwater Historical Society — tables and chairs for the Plumb House
• Dunedin Public Theater — licensing and equipment for a film program at Elevate
• Foster to Foster — grocery and gas cards for foster families
• Harbor Dish — insurance for a van used to deliver donated food
• PACE Center for Girls — supplies for a behavior program at a dropout prevention school
• Pack A Sack — weekend food for students facing food insecurity
• Quilter’s Crossing — batting and backing for quilts made for veterans, children in crisis and shelters
• Sailability — repairs and modifications to a boat and equipment used by people with disabilities and veterans
• Selah Freedom — soaps and wipes printed with an abuse hotline number
• Stop the Movement — bags of hygiene supplies, first aid items and snacks for abuse victims
• Suncoast Voices for Children — toddler clothing for children entering foster care
• The Magic Yarn Project — supplies for character wigs for children with medical hair loss
The club is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Tarpon Springs plants 34 trees at parks, stormwater ponds
TARPON SPRINGS — The city has planted 34 trees at 10 parks and stormwater ponds, finishing a state-funded urban forestry project.
Bald cypress, black olive, live oak and silver buttonwood were planted at sites the city identified as needing shade and greenery.
The work was funded largely through the Managing Community Forests grant program of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Planting is the third and final phase of the grant, which also paid for a citywide tree inventory and the Tarpon Springs Urban Forest Management Plan.
The city’s planning and zoning department oversaw the project.
“The contractor, RedTree Landscape Systems, did a fantastic job of providing high quality trees and top-notch installation services,” Planning Director Allie Keen said.
Golf tournament to benefit Dunedin Children’s Christmas Fund
DUNEDIN — The 33rd annual Veterans Day Golf Tournament will be held Nov. 7 at Clearwater Golf Club, with proceeds going to the Dunedin Children’s Christmas Fund.
The fund has provided Christmas gifts to more than 8,600 children over 25 years.
The tournament begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Entry is $100 a person and includes lunch afterward at Norton’s on Main Street in Dunedin. Hole sponsorships are $25 each or five for $100.

Oldsmar road closure to last three weeks
OLDSMAR — Access to Bayside Boulevard from State Road 586/Curlew Road closed July 28 and will remain closed for about three weeks while crews complete drainage work, the Florida Department of Transportation said.
Drivers should detour using Peppertree Drive, Oakleaf Boulevard and State Road 584/Tampa Road.
The drainage improvements run from Countryside Boulevard to Tampa Road. Officials asked motorists to watch for construction workers, cyclists and pedestrians near the work zone.
