PALMETTO — Crews finished the top floor of BayCare Hospital Manatee in July, moving Manatee County’s first hospital north of the Manatee River closer to a 2028 opening.

The six-story, 436,000-square-foot hospital is going up at 6750 Moccasin Wallow Road, about a mile north of where Interstate 275 branches off Interstate 75. It will be BayCare’s 17th hospital and the county’s only nonprofit hospital.

The full-service acute care facility will open with 154 private patient rooms and can expand to 207 beds as the area grows. Services will include emergency care, general and specialty surgery, cardiology, gastroenterology, urology, orthopedics, diagnostic and interventional imaging, obstetrics and neonatology.

Its neonatal intensive care unit will nearly double access to that level of care in the county.

Alabama-based Robins & Morton is serving as the general contractor for the project.

“As construction continues, we’re focused on creating a hospital that expands access to high-quality care, supports the needs of this growing community and delivers an exceptional experience for patients, families and team members from day one,” said Patrick Downes, president of BayCare Hospital Manatee and St. Joseph’s Hospital-South in Riverview.

The hospital anchors a larger campus. An adjacent outpatient center, BayCare HealthHub Manatee, is scheduled to open late this year with more than 46,000 square feet of laboratory services, imaging and primary and specialty care through BayCare Medical Group. Imaging will include MRI, CT, PET/CT, mammography, X-ray, bone density scans and ultrasound.

BayCare Medical Group opened a primary care office in Palmetto in 2023.
