Opening: new movie releases

A number of new movies and limited television series will debut this week, including the following titles opening in theaters or premiering via video on demand on various streaming platforms:

‘Insidious: Out of the Further’

Genre: Supernatural horror

Cast: Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Lin Shaye

Director: Jacob Chase

Rated: PG-13

Having earned over $740 million at the global box office, the Insidious franchise returns with a new family and a terror that redefines what The Further is capable of.

In “Insidious: Out of the Further,” Amelia Eve stars as Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in who discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe. When something evil comes after her, Gemma discovers an ability that changes everything: She doesn’t just enter The Further, she can bring what lives there back to the real world. Once the demons realize her power, our world becomes their playground.

The film is scheduled to be released on Aug. 21 by Sony Pictures Releasing.

‘Mutiny’

Genre: Action

Cast: Jason Statham, Annabelle Wallis and Adrian Lester

Director: Jean-François Richet

Rated: R

In “Mutiny,” after witnessing his billionaire boss’s murder and being framed for the crime, Cole Reed (Jason Statham) boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to avenge his boss’s death, only to discover an international conspiracy.

The film is set to be released by Lionsgate on Aug. 21.

‘Spa Weekend’

Genre: Comedy

Cast: Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris, and Michelle Buteau

Directors: Jon Lucas and Scott Moore

Rated: R

“Spa Weekend” is a hilarious and heartfelt comedy about four lifelong friends who realize that somewhere between careers, relationships, families and everyday responsibilities, they have forgotten how to take care of themselves and each other. Burned out and overdue for a break, the women escape to a luxury spa retreat for what turns out to be an unforgettable weekend dedicated to fun, laughter, and a lot of really bad decisions.

The film is scheduled to be released on Aug. 21 by Black Bear Pictures.

‘The Magic Faraway Tree’

Genre: Fantasy and adventure

Cast: Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Nonso Anozie, Nicola Coughlan, Jessica Gunning, Jennifer Saunders, and Rebecca Ferguson

Director: Ben Gregor

Rated: PG

Based on the worldwide best-selling series, “The Magic Faraway Tree” follows Polly (Claire Foy), Tim (Andrew Garfield), and their three children as they begin a new life in the remote countryside.

When the kids discover a magical tree hidden near their home, they are welcomed by its extraordinary residents and swept into spectacular, fantastical lands beyond their wildest imagination. With every adventure, the family discovers the magic that helps them reconnect with what matters most — each other.

The film will be released by Vertical on Aug. 21.

‘It Ends’

Genre: Horror

Cast: Phinehas Yoon, Akira Jackson, Noah Toth and Mitchell Cole

Director: Alexander Ullom

Rated: R

A group of recent grads head out on a late-night drive for grub, hoping to enjoy one final hangout before their paths diverge. Instead, they accidentally turn onto a never-ending, two-lane hellscape surrounded by untold horrors and cosmic forces beyond their understanding.

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release by Neon on Aug. 21.

‘Hot Spot’

Genre: Science fiction and thriller

Cast: Andrzej Konopka, Noomi Rapace, and Reika Kirishima

Director: Agnieszka Smoczyńska

Rated: R

In “Hot Spot,” set in a near future society ruled by sentient A.I., a private eye investigates a murder case only to discover a rebel group capable of undermining the digital overlord. As the detective’s identity slowly unravels, his world enters a state of hypnotic meltdown.

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on Aug. 21 through Focus Features.
