There’s a new place to grab dessert in downtown Dunedin.
Monkey Mike’s has opened at 369 Main St., specializing in frozen bananas and other sweet treats on a stick that are hand-dipped in chocolate and loaded with toppings like candy, nuts and caramel drizzle.
The family-owned shop is the brainchild of husband-and-wife duo Michael and Krista Rager and their daughters Mikayla, 13, and Brielle, 10, according to a news release.
“We wanted Monkey Mike’s to be one of those places that makes people smile the minute they walk through the door,” Michael Rager said in the release. “There’s something nostalgic about a frozen banana on a stick. We wanted to bring that feeling back and create a place where families like ours can make new memories together.”
The menu features the whole Dipped Banana, covered in a customer’s choice of chocolate and toppings, as well as the Mini Dipped Banana (half of a banana) and the Banana Pop (a quarter of a banana). Instead of throwing its banana peels away, the shop turns them into Banana Boost Plant Food, the release said, and gives a portion of every bag sold to Palm Harbor’s Suncoast Primate Sanctuary.
In the mood for a different chocolate-coated dessert? Monkey Mike’s guests can customize the Cheesecake on a Stick or the Ice Cream Sandwich on a Stick with their favorite toppings. Building these and the banana treats in a cup is also an option.
The shop celebrated its grand opening on Aug. 29 with a gift card giveaway and live steel drum music. The first 50 customers received a complimentary Banana Pop.
