WEEKI WACHEE -- On Sunday, Sept. 7, an alligator bit a juvenile, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.
The juvenile was swimming in the preserve. The juvenile and several other juveniles became isolated on a sandbar and were safely rescued by Hernando County Fire Rescue. The juvenile sustained puncture injuries to the arm and leg that were not considered life-threatening, and was transported to Bayonet Point Hospital for further treatment.
The alligator was estimated to be approximately nine to 12 feet in length. A licensed Florida wildlife trapper responded to the area and has placed traps for the alligator.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded to the scene and is handling the investigation related to the swimming violation.
For your safety, use extreme caution around waterways and follow all posted rules and restrictions. Do not swim in areas where swimming is prohibited.
