It is England, 1381. The plague sweeps across Europe. Half the population of England is dead. Grief, fear, and anger engulf those who survive. The stage is set for the Great Rebellion.
“The Uprising” opens on the wind-beaten fens of east England. The solitary figure of the Ploughman (Andrew Garfield) — a farmer haunted by the loss of his family — is bent double in relentless toil. Far away, the oligarchs who surround the troubled boy King Richard II (Woody Norman) plot a brutal tax on the poorest members of society. Tax collectors are sent out across the countryside, and when Ploughman intervenes in a violent assault, a touch paper is lit. Simmering discontent erupts into furious revolution. Within days, tens of thousands march on London in the name of justice and freedom.
In a desperate attempt to play for time, the oligarchs send the King to meet the rebels outside the city on the bank of the River Thames. But confronting the rebel horde and fearing for their lives, they pull back the King. Enraged, the rebel army invades London.
With the capital now under the control of the people, and his council in crisis, the young King Richard must decide the fate of his kingdom. With whom will he stand? Will the rebels succeed in their quest for a fairer society — or will their revolution bear only tyranny and blood? And what of the Ploughman? Will he find the peace that has eluded him his entire life?
The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on Sept. 10 by Focus Features.
