WESLEY CHAPEL — Bagpipe music drifted across the courtyard at Tampa Premium Outlets on Sept. 5 as walkers gathered for the 9/11 Memorial Mile, an annual remembrance of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

An honor guard opened the ceremony. A bell tolled at the moment the World Trade Center was struck. Families walked and ran the mile course together, past photo displays of the dead and a poster listing every name in type small enough to fit. Pasco County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Jackson, a K-9 handler, was recognized as the event’s local hero.
