Letter: The downside of Amendment 3

Re: Tax cuts a down payment on the American Dream (Sept. 3)

I am writing with regards to the letter published by guest columnist Nick Weston on the subject of Amendment 3 and his view of the American Dream. I believe he would have been advised to include the extreme negative impact of this amendment. His only concern appears to be that 30-somethings are challenged with affording a home. This amendment would benefit only those whose income should be able to afford their first home. If you are not able to pay your taxes, then you don’t purchase a home unless you find one within your earnings level.

The downside of Amendment 3 affects every resident, homeowner or not. You don’t pass an amendment that would cripple services to the public such as the health department, libraries, firefighters, recreation departments, emergency medical services, and more. An excellent source of information regarding the true impact of Amendment 3 can be found at the city of Seminole website.

I am not opposed to home ownership. But not at the expense of every other citizen. The public needs to be educated on the true effects this amendment will have on everyone.
